How this timeline works

The timeline is built from 45 planning tasks grouped into six time buckets. When you enter your wedding date, the tool calculates how many months are between today and the wedding, then shows you only the buckets that still apply. If you are 8 months out, the 12+ months and 9 to 11 months tasks have either been done already or need to be done first, and the tool flags them as catch up tasks in the earliest shown bucket.

The task list is compiled from the same data that powers our 111 page planning guide, cross referenced with The Knot's wedding planning timeline and the WeddingWire checklist. Every task is one that couples consistently report being glad they did, or regret skipping.

Frequently asked

How long does wedding planning take?

The average US engagement is 15 months, but most couples plan their wedding actively in the final 9 to 12 months. Anything shorter than 6 months forces tradeoffs, usually on venue availability and top photographers.

What if my wedding is less than 3 months away?

The tool compresses overdue tasks into a single catch up bucket and flags urgency. Focus on marriage license, final vendor payments, confirming headcount, and logistics. Skip anything that is not mission critical.

Does this work for destination weddings?

Mostly yes. For destination weddings, add 2 to 3 months to the front of each bucket to account for travel coordination, and send save the dates 10 to 12 months out instead of 8.

Why not a simple printable checklist?

Static checklists are the same for every couple, regardless of how much time they have. The timeline generator only shows tasks that are still relevant to your actual wedding date, which is more useful when you are behind or ahead of schedule.
