How this calculator works
The percentages are a weighted average across three industry sources. The Knot 2024 Real Weddings Study surveyed 10,000+ couples. WeddingWire 2024 Newlywed Report pulled from 18,000+ weddings. Zola First Look 2024 added another 57,000 data points.
Venue and catering anchor at 42% because that is the single biggest fixed cost on a wedding budget across all three sources. Photography sits at 11% because couples consistently rate it as the least regretted spend in post wedding surveys.
These are starting points, not rules. If photography matters more to you, push it to 14%. If you are having a backyard wedding, venue drops to 20% and flowers rise. The only percentage that should stay fixed is the contingency fund at 5 to 8%.
Frequently asked
What percentage of a wedding budget goes to venue and food?
Around 42%. This is the single largest category and usually close to half of your total. It bundles venue rental, catering, bar service, and rentals.
Is the calculator region specific?
Not yet. V1 uses national US averages. Regional multipliers are on the roadmap once The Knot 2025 regional data is published.
Should I include the honeymoon?
No. Treat the honeymoon as a separate budget. Mixing them almost always leads to overspending on the wedding itself.
